Google: It Doesn't Need More Engineers

2105:

Engineers are great at solving problems.

But they’re not always so great at figuring out which problems to solve.

Lost the ‘via’—apologies to whomever prompted me to open that tab.

“Google will never be a great consumer company until it takes a lesson from the book of Jobs and hires a bunch more liberal arts majors.

Engineers are great at solving problems. But they’re not always so great at figuring out which problems to solve.”

Instead of having to upload your thousands of MP3s, iTunes may be able to simply check your (much smaller) database file and recreate it online using a central repository of music (in other words, no huge uploads). The technology wouldn’t be new — Lala, which Apple acquired in 2009, was doing that years ago. It’s just a matter of hammering out the deals with the labels. And really, I can’t imagine Apple launching a service that tells its users to sit back and wait a couple of days. Instead, you’ll fire up the new version of iTunes, check a box saying you want your iPhone and iPad to have access to all of your content, and bam — users won’t have to learn what an online locker is, their stuff will just be where they want it.

Without The Labels, Google’s Music Locker Service Will Look Like Apple’s Ugly Sibling. Again.

This is the difference between companies that build solutions or platforms and companies that build experiences. Google and Facebook and Amazon can’t figure out how to compete with Apple because they don’t know how to build experiences… just solutions and platforms and systems.

Have you read Think Quarterly, Google's new free magazine?

newsweek:

utnereader:

If Think Quarterly is a free, niched magazine—but it’s bankrolled by one of the largest companies on Earth—is it still considered “alternative press”?

“It will be fascinating to see how this evolves. The mag is currently aimed just at Google’s partners and advertisers—but, let’s be honest, how long do we really think that’ll be the case? Here’s how managing director Matt Brittin introduced the publication: “At Google, we often think that speed is the forgotten ‘killer application’ - the ingredient that can differentiate winners from the rest. But in a world of accelerating change, we all need time to reflect. Think Quarterly is a breathing space in a busy world. It’s a place to take time out and consider what’s happening and why it matters.”

APPLE V GOOGLE | More Intelligent Life

Last year he (Scott Adams, the creator of the Dilbert) depicted technology-tethered humans as de facto cyborgs: “If a cyborg can remove its digital eye and leave it on a shelf as a surveillance device, and I think we all agree that it can, then your cellphone qualifies as part of your body.” He sees the phone as an exobrain: “Your regular brain uses your exobrain to outsource part of its memory, and perform other functions, such as GPS navigation, or searching the internet. If you’re anything like me, your exobrain is with you 24-hours a day.”

Well it looks like Digg is better than Reddit and Reddit is better than Digg…let me ask you…how’d you get here? There are some pretty insightful and amusing revelations in these Google Suggests, like “Facebook is for losers,” “Twitter is for old people” and “MySpace is ghetto.” It also looks like all of these sites are down. My favorite is the fact that people feel “Google is watching you”….come on guys, don’t do evil.

If You’re A Good Person Or A Web Browsing Fiend, Download This Chrome Extension Now

I’m addicted to browser tabs. I probably open several hundred of them each day during my regular web browsing. And today brings good news: Google wants to reward me for that.

Well technically, Google wants to reward charities on my behalf for my obsessive web browsing. A new initiative today called “Chrome for a Cause” asks you to download a Google-made Chrome extension that will note your tab opening activity and allow you to donate to one of five charities at the end of each day based on your usage. Yep, just browse the web, and donate to charity.

The charities involved in this are: The Nature Conservancy, charity: water, Doctors Without Borders, Un Techo para mi Pais, and Room to Read. Here’s Google’s breakdown of how much you have to browse to donate to the various charities:

  • 10 tabs = 1 tree planted
  • 10 tabs = 1 book published and donated
  • 25 tabs = 1 vaccination treatment provided
  • 100 tabs = 1 square foot of shelter built
  • 200 tabs = 1 person’s clean water for a year

The initiative will run for five days from December 15 to the 19. Google says they’ll donate up to a million dollars on behalf of the extension’s users.
